“ON THE ROAD WITH JESUS”            - Night Church

“THE NARROW WAY” (2)

Brian Kenning

Reading:  Matthew 7:13-14

1.      The Journey with Jesus begins with a narrow gate and continues on a narrow road

-          2 gates

-          2 journeys

-          2 destinations

-          2 kinds of traveller

Jesus calls himself       “The Gate”  (John 10:7,9)

                                    And “The Way”  (John 14:6)

Every journey has a starting point

We too must chose a gate/door where the journey begins

2.      On the narrow way the traveller throws off anything that will hinder the journey to life

Lent is a time of evaluation, self examination, putting off asking – “is there anything that right now is hindering my walk with God?”

Ephesians 4:20 ff

3.      How do you decide what to throw off, lay aside, so you can keep on the narrow way?

2 possible approaches

i.                    A list of “do’s” and “don’ts”

The list approach has been tried

-          Paul found it frustrating (Romans Chapter 7)

“I do the things I don’t want to do

I don’t do the things I want to do”

-          What’s a pass mark?

ii.                  Ask the Holy Spirit to show you the things to leave behind on the journey

Rather than one-size fits-all when Jesus encountered people he shone His spotlight on the things that needed addressing at that point in their journey

Examples:

-          possessions - Mark 10:17

-          family matters - Luke 9:57-62

-          worries and fussing - Luke 10:41

-          racism and exclusiveness – Acts 10

-          baptism – Acts 10

-          be born again – John 3

What about You?

You ask God    -    God asks You
